The day of Ashura (Ashoura) is "celebrated" by Muslims worldwide on the tenth day of Muharram in the Islamic calendar. This date corresponded to December 28, 2009 in our calendar.
Ashura marks the day that Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad, was killed and mutilated at the battle of Karbala by rival Muslims in 680 A.D. This battle is said to have "cemented" the split between Sunnis and Shi'ites.

Many Muslims believe that their sins can be forgiven by participating in Ashura.
A popular saying is "A single tear shed for Hussain washes away a hundred sins."

This event shows a great difference between Islam and Christianity.
Muslims inflict these horrific acts on their bodies in
order to receive forgiveness of their sins from their god Allah.
Christians receive forgiveness because God himself came
to earth to allow horrific acts to be done to His body.
Jesus will "take a bullet" for me, and in fact did give up his human life for all of mankind.
Does your god demand that you "take a bullet" for him?
Jesus gave up His life so that we can enter heaven.
Does your god require that you give up your life in order to enter heaven?
Would your God die for you, even though you don't deserve it?
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish,
but have everlasting life."
John 3:16
